What is Sleeve Gastrectomy?

What is Sleeve Gastrectomy

It is a laparoscopic procedure to reduce the stomach capacity by removing approximately 70-80% of the tissue in vertical axis.

Because it is a restrictive surgery, it provides a balanced and satisfactory weight loss by achieving adequate satiety with a small amount of food and lowering the ghrelin hormone level, while significantly reducing hunger.

Since the procedure does not drastically alter the anatomy and physiology of the digestive system, this method has become the most preferred method of bariatric surgery both in Turkey and around the world.

Transit Bipartition (Type 2 Diabetic Surgery)

Transit Bipartition (Type 2 Diabetic Surgery)

Nowadays we see a significant increase in the number of diabetics. Especially in patients who have BMI over 30 and pay special attention to their diets, yet despite their insulin intake have uncontrollable blood sugar levels are suitable candidates for this procedure. If these patients already have adequate insulin reserves, after the operation their blood sugar levels drop to normal physiologic levels without having need to take insulin.

In other words these patients are suitable for surgical treatment. We use transit bipartition technique, which is one of the most preferred methods in the world today, by using advanced technology with laparoscopic surgical technique.

What is Gastric Bypass?

What is Gastric Bypass

It is a surgical procedure that provides weight loss both through minimizing (restricting) gastric capacity and disabling a certain portion of the small intestine (disrupting absorption).

Because the gastric bypass surgery performed with the laparoscopic method provides control over type 2 diabetes more effectively, it is the prominent method of bariatric surgery for obese patients with type 2 diabetes.

What is Gastric Balloon?

What is Gastric Balloon

This procedure is advised for individuals whose BMIs are in between 25 and 35, and who have failed to lose weight through diets and exercise. Gastric balloon is a balloon which is placed in the stomach through endoscopy. Due to the amount of space it takes within the stomach, the patient experiences the feeling of being full while eating less than before. As a result, patients start losing weight through eating less.

The procedure takes about 20 minutes to complete. The adjustable balloon remains in the stomach for 12 months.

Candidates who have tried to lose weight by dieting and doing exercises for a long time, yet failed to get any results, and candidates whose BMI is %35 or over may be suitable for the surgery.
It can start right after surgery and continue for the next 18 to 24 months.
Gastric balloon, adjustable gastric banding, gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, diabetic surgery (transit bipartition)
The rapid weight loss observed right after the surgery gradually slows down and by adjusting the diet the weight loss is stopped eventually.
Because the stomach has elasticity, it will expand to a certain extent through time, however it can never return to its former size. To prevent weight gain in the future, it is best to avoid carbonated drinks and high calorie intakes. It is also crucial to separate liquid and solid food while eating.
Because the bariatric surgery is done with laparoscopic (closed) technique, it is possible to experience mild, moderate or heavy pain in 8 hours following the surgery.
The patients are discharged from the hospital in 3-4 days and as long as the work isn’t heavy labor, he/she can return to workplace in 10 days.
This depends on the patient’s tissue quality, his/her BMI ratio and whether he/she exercises after the operation. If the patient has problems with excess skin, it is advised that only if 2 years have passed after the surgery and the weight loss has stopped, to undergo plastic surgery to remove the excess skin.
For the following month avoiding lifting heavy objects and 15-30 minutes of jogging are advised. 6 weeks later you can start doing exercises.
It acts by minimizing gastric capacity and providing less secretion of appetite hormone (ghrelin)
65-80% of the excess weight can be lost within 1 year.
The ages of the patients can be anywhere between 18-65.
Candidates who wish to become pregnant, may do so 1 year after the surgery.
Approximately half of the patients experience hair loss after surgery. However, we can easily say that this only a temporary process. The lost hair grows back eventually.
It is advised to avoid smoking for a month and drinking for 6 months following the surgery.
The surgery provides the fastest and most effective weight loss. However, the weight loss can be inadequate due to technical reasons (such as widening of the stomach), frequent high-calorie intakes and inadequate exercise.
Operative laparoscopic method is used to make 5 cuts 1-2 cm in size and there is no disturbing scar tissue while varying from person to person.
